How to read this table

Every row runs the same calculation as our paycheck calculator: 2026 federal income tax withholding, Social Security and Medicare, plus each state's estimated income tax and employee-paid programs such as disability insurance and paid family leave. 9 states don't tax wages, so they tie on income tax and differ only on payroll programs (Washington and Alaska have some).

  • Local taxes aren't included here, because they depend on the city or county. They matter most in Maryland, Indiana, New York City, Pennsylvania, Ohio and Michigan — use each state's calculator to add yours.
  • Take-home isn't purchasing power. Prices differ a lot by state. Pair this with the cost of living calculator before deciding a move is worth it.
  • State estimates use each state's 2026 brackets, deductions and credits where published; each state page lists the sources and anything the estimate leaves out.
