How much do software developers make?

The median annual wage for software developers was $135,980 in May 2025, so half of workers earned more and half earned less. The lowest-paid 10% earned less than $82,460 and the highest-paid 10% more than $214,670. As an hourly rate, the median is $65.38. About 1,687,890 people work in this occupation nationwide. The highest state medians are in California ($174,410), Washington ($166,540) and New York ($166,180). After taxes and local prices, though, a median paycheck goes furthest in Washington.
