How much do retail salespersons make?

The median annual wage for retail salespersons was $35,410 in May 2025, so half of workers earned more and half earned less. The lowest-paid 10% earned less than $27,210 and the highest-paid 10% more than $47,890. As an hourly rate, the median is $17.03. About 3,897,860 people work in this occupation nationwide. The highest state medians are in Washington ($39,560), District of Columbia ($38,500) and California ($38,440). After taxes and local prices, though, a median paycheck goes furthest in North Dakota.
