The median annual wage for economists was $124,720 in May 2025, so half of workers earned more and half earned less. The lowest-paid 10% earned less than $67,360 and the highest-paid 10% more than $238,060. As an hourly rate, the median is $59.96. About 17,790 people work in this occupation nationwide. The highest state medians are in District of Columbia ($167,590), New Jersey ($167,550) and Delaware ($159,120). After taxes and local prices, though, a median paycheck goes furthest in Delaware.
